Temple of Literature

The Temple of Literature – Imperial Academy is one of Hanoi’s most important historical and cultural landmarks. It stands as a lasting symbol of Confucian learning and is recognized as Vietnam’s first national university, having educated generations of scholars since its foundation. The complex reflects the strong commitment of the Ly Dynasty—especially King Ly Nhan Tong—to promoting education, a legacy that made the Ly period one of the most intellectually flourishing eras in Vietnamese history. With its distinctive architecture and deep historical significance across multiple dynasties, the site continues to inspire respect and admiration.

Built in 1070, the Temple of Literature was followed by the Imperial Academy in 1076, located just beside it in the southern area of ancient Thang Long (modern-day Dong Da District, Hanoi). Covering over 54,000 square meters, the complex is enclosed by walls and divided into five harmonious courtyards. Key features include Van Lake, the worship area dedicated to Confucius, Khue Van Pavilion—now a symbol of Hanoi and featured on the 100,000 VND banknote—the Well of Heavenly Clarity, stone steles honoring successful doctoral graduates, and the Thai Hoc area where royal students once studied.

Originally serving as both a Confucian temple and a royal school for nobles, the Imperial Academy later opened to talented commoners, becoming Vietnam’s first true university. Today, the Temple of Literature – Imperial Academy is a Special National Monument, preserving valuable historical records, unique architecture, and the enduring spirit of respect for learning, teachers, and talent—values that remain central to Vietnamese culture and identity.
